Ronnie Banerjee

Candidate Statement: RB
I am seeking election to the International Chemists SD of the American Chemical Society (ACS) because I am deeply committed to advancing global collaboration, inclusivity, and scientific progress within the chemical sciences. As chemistry continues to evolve on a global scale, fostering robust international relationships is essential—not only for scientific innovation but also for addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time, from climate change to public health.
My research spans three continents. I hold two passports. Nevertheless, in 2025, I must carry my “documents” with me everywhere, because as a queer person of colour, I am always in the crosshairs. This experience, this threat of injustice informs my science, my life, and my candidacy for this position. I want to raise my voice to advocate for my fellow chemists, even if it shakes in fear.
However, let us discuss happier things: with a background in bionanotechnology, I have had the privilege of working with diverse teams across borders, gaining first-hand experience of the strength and value that international collaboration brings to scientific discovery and professional development. I believe my perspectives and experiences spanning the global north as well as the global south can contribute meaningfully to the committee’s mission of supporting chemists and chemical enterprises worldwide. If elected, I will work to:
- Promote inclusive initiatives that support chemists from underrepresented and developing regions,
- Foster international research partnerships and professional exchanges, Help strengthen ACS’s global outreach and presence through collaborative programs and events,
- Advocate for policies and programs that support sustainable scientific development and equitable access to educational and research opportunities.
My goal is to help bridge geographic and cultural divides in the chemical sciences and to ensure that all chemists—regardless of location—have a voice in shaping the future of our discipline. I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute to the International Chemists Subdivision and to further the American Chemical Society’s vision of improving people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry on a truly global scale.
Thank you for your consideration.
Minority Chemists
Pravien Rajaram
Candidate Statement: PR
As a chemist who immigrated to the United States from Sri Lanka in 2016 in pursuit of world-class education and opportunity, I am passionate about advancing diversity, inclusion, and professional growth within the chemical sciences community. Having earned my B.S., M.S., and most recently my Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at American institutions, I have firsthand experience of both the challenges and immense potential facing minority scientists in the U.S.
Throughout my academic and professional journey, I have been immersed in interdisciplinary research, team leadership, and mentorship, collaborating with and guiding students from varying backgrounds. Mentorship and outreach are central to my professional values. As a graduate mentor, I have trained and inspired undergraduates and early-career scientists, helping several pursue their own graduate studies. I am eager to bring this spirit of mentorship and advocacy to the ACS Minority Affairs Subdivision.
My multicultural perspective gives me unique insight into the barriers faced by underrepresented chemists—ranging from navigating cultural expectations to gaining access to leadership and research opportunities. I am committed to helping ACS increase participation and leadership of people of color at every level, while also building culturally relevant programming, outreach, and professional development.

As a queer, international chemist of color from a low-income background, I have experienced firsthand how mentorship, visibility, and belonging can help young scholars overcome systemic barriers in the scientific community, transforming careers and lives in the process. As a young scholar myself, I’m passionate about paying these transformative experiences forward to create inclusive, empowering spaces where early career chemists can not only succeed in the pursuit of their academic goals, but thrive as a member of a diverse community of scholars.
My scientific journey bridges synthetic inorganic chemistry, enzymology, and spectroscopy, and has been scaffolded by my experiences as a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University and as a postdoctoral research fellow at Penn State University. Throughout my young career, I’ve mentored students across diverse identities and institutions, however I’m most proud of my LGBTQIA+ mentorship role at Johns Hopkins, where I supported international, queer, and first-generation students navigating the challenges of academia, transitioning cultures, and self-acceptance. Additionally, I have served as a member of the DEI committee in my current department at Penn State, helped organize DEI-focused programming for national symposia, and continue to mentor students from historically marginalized backgrounds with a focus on identity-affirming guidance.
In addition to my experience mentoring early career chemists, I’ve been working to co-chair inclusive scientific events such as the Early Career Investigators in Bioinorganic Chemistry symposium at ACS Fall 2025, reflecting my commitment to the creation of platforms to elevate the profiles of young scientists on a national stage. I also co-chaired the 2024 Penn State Postdoctoral Symposium and the 2024 Gordon Research Seminar in Bioinorganic Chemistry, where one of my central goals was to help amplify the voices of early career researchers in my field. I believe that leadership is most meaningful when it removes barriers, fosters community, and uplifts others, and ACS PROF is a powerful platform to advance that mission.
As Chair, I will focus on amplifying the voices of early career scientists through collaborative programming, professional development workshops, and inclusive community-building events. I aim to create mentorship networks that center equity and access as part of their mission, foster partnerships across subdivisions, and reflect the diversity of our field.
If elected, I will lead with accountability, empathy, and action, and work to ensure that all young chemists feel seen, supported, and empowered to lead.
