Impact on Members

Petition for Global Representation on Council – Passed

Representation across the globe for all ACS members in Council has passed. This petition allows for the creation of Global Electoral Zones for the election of Councilors by ACS members living outside the territory of existing Local Sections. The potential number of Councilors elected for the Global Electoral Zones will be calculated alongside the allocation of Local Section Councilor allotment, totaling 80 percent of Council, with the rest of the Council representing ACS Divisions.

Establishment of New International Chemical Sciences Chapters – Passed

On the recommendation of the Committee on International Activities (IAC), Council approved the creation of international chemical science chapters in the following areas:

  • Bangladesh
  • East and Northeast India
  • West India

International Chemical Sciences Chapters (ICSCs) have been formed to connect ACS members and chemical scientists within a geographic area outside of the United States together. To learn more about current chapters, check the updated list of ICSCs on the ACS website.

Academic Professional Guidelines and Chemical Professional’s Code of Conduct Updated – Passed

The Academic Professional Guidelines apply to academic members – inclusive of students, faculty, technicians, staff, and organizing bodies such as departments – to provide recommended practices for fostering productive working relationships. You may find the guidelines at https://www.acs.org/careers/career-services/ethics/academic-professional-guidelines.html. The update includes amendments to include guidelines of the shared responsibility and accountability of those in positions or institutions of power in creating and shaping a safe environment.

The Chemical Professional’s Code of Conduct was also updated as well. Find the code of conduct at https://www.acs.org/careers/career-services/ethics/the-chemical-professionals-code-of-conduct.html.
