The Division of Professional Relations (PROF) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) announces their selection for the PROF Leadership Development Award, Dr. Matt Gordon. Dr. Gordon will represent PROF at the annual ACS Leadership Development Institute, January 31 – February 2, 2025, in Houston, TX.
The ACS Leadership Development Institute is an invitation-only conference where leaders across the chemical enterprise come together to develop and hone their skills in leadership and management to empower their success as a leader in the chemical sciences. Alongside workshops and networking events, the conference will feature track-based training, e.g., growing leaders in ACS Divisions, Local Sections, and Younger Leaders.
The investment in the next generation of leaders is important. “The ACS Leadership Institute provides tools and skills critical for emerging leaders. Not only can leaders use what they have gained at the Institute in their professional careers, but we also foster a strong leadership pipeline in our Division, our Society, and the greater chemical sciences community,” shared Matt Grandbois, one of PROF’s Councilors.
Matt Gordon is a Laboratory Director’s Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Savannah River National Laboratory in Aiken, SC, researching microwave syntheses of high entropy alloy nanoparticles. He completed his Ph.D. at Indiana University – Bloomington, working in the laboratory of Dr. Sara Skrabalak, where he researched novel precursors for the controlled aqueous synthesis of bismuth oxyhalide nanoparticles. Prior to graduate school, he worked in quality control in the pharmaceutical industry for a few years after obtaining his B.S. in chemistry from The Ohio State University. Alongside his Ph.D. work, Matt earned a certificate in business through the IU Kelley School of Business, a skillset he plans to use as a project manager in industry. Outside of the lab, Matt enjoys hiking, craft beer, woodworking, and cheering for Cleveland sports teams.
The Division of Professional Relations of the American Chemical Society elevates professionalism for all chemists, representing all types of chemical professionals of all identities, career stages, and chemical disciplines. PROF aims to empower professionals in the chemical sciences for success in a dynamic, diverse world through the creation of inclusive communities, resources, and programming.
